The Halloween Mystery
The Witch’s Spell Book has vanished inside Midnight Manor. There are eight possible hiding places, but only one room contains the missing book.
Students must solve seven past tense challenges. After each completed activity, the teacher gives students a clue identifying one room they can eliminate from their Haunted House Map.
7 completed tasks → 7 rooms eliminated → 1 hiding place remains!
The 7 Grammar Tasks
Task 1 – Regular or Irregular?
Students sort past tense verbs into regular and irregular verb groups. They then write the base form of the irregular verbs for additional verb-form practice.
Task 2 – Choose the Correct Verb
Students read each sentence and choose the correct past tense verb to complete it. They also identify whether each answer is a regular or irregular verb.
Task 3 – Change It to the Past
Students rewrite sentences by changing present tense verbs into their correct simple past tense forms. This activity includes practice with both regular and irregular verbs.
Task 4 – Verb Maze
Students color a path from START to KEY by moving only through past tense verbs. After completing the maze, they sort the verbs from their path into regular and irregular groups.
Task 5 – Irregular Verb Dominoes
Students build a domino chain by matching each base verb with its correct irregular past tense form. They then complete the included recording sheet.
Task 6 – Crack the Code
Students use a Halloween picture code to decode a series of verbs. After solving each word, they change the verb into its correct past tense form.
Task 7 – Past Tense Word Search
Students change each base verb into the past tense and then search for the correct past tense forms hidden inside the word search puzzle.
Bonus Activity: Halloween I Spy
Need an extra activity for early finishers? The included Halloween I Spy gives students a fun break from grammar practice. Students find, circle, count, and record the hidden Halloween pictures.

How the Escape Works
- Students begin with the Haunted House Map showing 8 possible hiding places.
- Students complete Task 1.
- The teacher checks the task and gives students the first clue card.
- Students cross the identified room off their map.
- Students continue to the next grammar task.
- After all 7 tasks are completed, 7 rooms will have been eliminated.
- The one remaining room reveals where the Witch’s Spell Book is hidden.
